David Mattei, LICSW is the founder and primary therapist at Maple Cove Therapy. He was drawn to psychotherapy out of a deeply held belief that supporting others through difficult periods of life is a profound privilege. To bear witness to another person’s experience — and to help them feel seen, understood, and safe — is work David approaches with humility, care, and respect.

David’s professional background includes more than a decade working alongside concierge mental health treatment providers and hospitals, serving individuals and families facing complex mental health challenges, including substance use disorders and major mood conditions. In these roles, he worked as a case manager and consultant, coordinating care among families, treatment teams, and clinical providers in highly nuanced situations requiring thoughtful, individualized support.

He earned his Master of Social Work from the Simmons University School of Social Work, where he trained as a psychotherapist. During his clinical practicum at the Brookline Center for Community Mental Health, he provided individual psychotherapy to clients across the lifespan presenting with a wide range of mental health concerns. At the Boston Public Health Commission, he worked with vulnerable populations facing a range of mental health and social challenges, helping individuals move toward greater stability, secure housing, and access essential resources.

David’s therapeutic style is warm, grounded, and collaborative. His work is rooted in psychodynamic theory, helping clients explore patterns in relationships, emotions, and past experiences that shape their present lives. He integrates this insight-oriented approach with practical tools drawn from cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), and mindfulness-based practices. This combination allows for both deeper understanding and meaningful, sustainable change.

Clients often describe sessions with David as steady, compassionate, and clarifying — a space where they can slow down, reflect, and reconnect with themselves. His areas of focus include anxiety, depression, trauma, substance use, life transitions, relationship dynamics, and identity development.

At the heart of David’s work is a simple belief: therapy should provide insight, connection, and relief. Maple Cove Therapy was founded on the idea that meaningful growth occurs when people feel supported enough to explore their experiences honestly and develop new ways of relating to themselves and others.

Therapeutic Approach

I integrate several evidence-based and relational approaches:

    • Psychodynamic Therapy — exploring how past relationships and experiences shape present feelings and patterns
    • CBT — identifying patterns in thoughts and behaviors that keep you feeling stuck.
    • DBT Skills — supporting emotional regulation and resilience
    • ACT — clarifying values and committed action
    • Mindfulness — developing awareness of your inner experience with curiosity and compassion.

Some sessions may feel reflective and exploratory, while others feel more practical and skills-focused — depending on what you need that day.
